the joy of slow games in a fast world

these days, it seems like everyone’s in a rush to get somewhere. we’re constantly connected, constantly notified, and constantly distracted. it’s no wonder people are looking for ways to slow down and unwind. for me, that’s meant getting back into puzzles. not the kind you do on your phone, either – actual, physical puzzles that you can hold in your hands and work on at your leisure.

i was at a friend’s house recently and saw a bunch of peaceable kingdom puzzles scattered around the room. they had these beautiful, intricate designs that looked like a lot of fun to work on. my friend told me that she liked to do them when she was feeling stressed out, because they helped her calm down and focus on the present moment. that made a lot of sense to me – when you’re working on a puzzle, you can’t be thinking about anything else. you have to be fully engaged, or you’ll never get it finished.

the benefits of slowing down

slowing down and doing something physical can be really beneficial for your mental health. when you’re constantly staring at screens and rushing to get things done, it can be tough to relax and unwind. but when you’re working on a puzzle, you can let your mind wander a bit. you can think about your day, or your week, or your life, and try to make sense of things. and if you get stuck on the puzzle, that’s okay – you can just set it aside and come back to it later. it’s not like you’re going to miss a deadline or anything.

another benefit of puzzles is that they can be really social. my friend and i spent hours working on those peaceable kingdom puzzles together, chatting and laughing as we went. it was a really great way to spend time together, and we didn’t even realize how much time had passed until we looked up and saw that it was getting dark outside. that’s the kind of experience that you just don’t get from staring at a screen.

finding the right pace

of course, not everyone is going to be into puzzles. some people might find them boring, or frustrating, or just not their thing. and that’s okay – there are plenty of other ways to slow down and unwind. the key is to find something that you enjoy, and that helps you feel calm and focused. for some people, that might be reading a book, or taking a walk, or practicing yoga. for me, it’s puzzles – but everyone is different, and that’s what makes life interesting.

as i’ve gotten back into puzzles, i’ve noticed that i’m feeling more relaxed and more focused. i’m not as easily distracted, and i’m able to think more clearly. and i think that’s because i’m giving myself permission to slow down, and to do something that i enjoy. it’s not always easy, of course – there are still days when i feel like i should be doing something more “productive”. but overall, i’m really glad that i’ve found something that helps me unwind, and that brings me joy.
